rápidas a cambios fisiológicos o medioambientales.

Adult Neurogenesis in Pathogenesis and Treatment of neuropsychiatric symptoms in
neurodegeneration

Synucleinopathies are frequently accompanied by neuropsychiatric symptoms. There is
increasing evidence that impairment in adult hippocampal neurogenesis is linked to the
development of these symptoms. This project will use structural and behavioral analysis to
test whether restoration of neurogenesis will ameliorate behavior deficits in synucleinopathy
models. In addition, transcriptomic and bioinformatic analyses will be used to identify
mechanisms and candidate targets to restore neurogenesis / stem cell dependent plasticity.
The project will be conducted in a close collaboration between the Department of Molecular
Neurology (Head: Prof. Jürgen Winkler) and the Institute of Biochemistry (Research
Group Prof. Chichung Lie).
We are looking for highly motivated students with a Diploma/Master degree in
Molecular Medicine or Biology. Candidates should have a strong background in
Neurobiology, Cell Biology or Molecular Biology.

Postdoc position

Postdoc position - PALM/STORM to study
S. pombe replication/genome stability
Full time, fixed term until 30 September 2016
Salary range: starting at £30,424 and rising to £36,298 per annum. It is normal to
appoint at the first point of the salary scale.
Closing date for applications: 21 August 2013 (can be flexible)
Expected start date: 1 October 2013
Description
An ERC-funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is immediately available in the
laboratory of Prof. Tony Carr to use PALM/STORM super-resolution microscopy to
study the mechanisms by which DNA replication is restarted following replication fork
collapse in fission yeast.
The aim of the project is to establish how replication is restarted when a
replication fork
becomes non-functional as a consequence of either DNA damage or replication blocks
imposed by DNA-protein interactions. Our recent data (Mizuno et al 2012, Nature
493:246-9) show that such restarted forks are error prone and we are exploring the
nature
and components of the restarted replication machinery using microscopy and classical
molecular studies.
Applicants must have a relevant PhD and a clear understanding of relevant microscopy
technologies. Previous experience of a range of molecular and cell biology techniques
and an interest in DNA replication are preferable attributes. The successful
candidate will
show evidence of successfully completing research projects.

PhD Research Project

Deciphering the Role of Global Transcriptional Noise During Rapid Adaptation to Reactive Oxygen Species.

Dept/School/Faculty:
PhD Supervisor:
Application Deadline:
31 August 2013
Gene expression is inherently stochastic due to low copy numbers of genes and mRNAs and to extrinsic fluctuations. Genes that are involved in stress response are particularly noisy and the resulting population heterogeneity is thought to help cells to cope in uncertain environments. Although dynamic gene expression responses in cell populations have been widely studied, we know very little about the cell-to-cell variability in transcriptional programs launched by individual cells in response to environmental challenges, and even less about how this response depends on cell phenotypes such as size or cell-cycle stages.
Oxidative stress resulting from an excess of reactive oxygen species damages components of the cell and is implicated in human diseases such as Alzheimer and cancer. In free living organisms, survival after acute exposure to oxidative agents is ensured by a complex and coordinated gene expression program regulated at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe is a popular model to study the cellular responses to oxidative stress with many of the pathways involved conserved in multicellular organisms.
In order to understand better the interplay between environmental stress, signalling pathway regulators and stochasticity in gene expression, we offer an interdisciplinary PhD studentship shared between the groups of Dr Samuel Marguerat (Quantitative Gene Expression) at the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre and of Dr Vahid Shahrazaei (Biomathematics) at the department of Mathematics, both affiliated to Imperial College London. If awarded the studentship, you will analyse the dynamic response of fission yeast cells to oxidative stress and exploit the quantitative and single-cell genomics techniques being developed in the Quantitative Gene Expression group to generate measurements of 1) cellular phenotypes such as cell-size and cell-cycle stages, 2) mRNA levels in cell populations, and 3) transcriptional cell-to-cell variability in single cells. You will then use these datasets to develop, in the Shahrezaei group, stochastic mathematical models of oxidative stress signalling. This integrated experimental and computational project will shed light on how stochasticity and global noise in gene expression are affected as a function of cell phenotypes during a dynamic response.
Candidates from both biological and physical sciences would be considered but a clear motivation to develop the skills necessary to pursue both the theoretical and experimental aspects of the project is desired. Programming or computational experience would be an asset. Although a start date in October 2013 would be preferred, applicants interested in starting at a later date will also be considered.
This project will involve techniques such as: yeast genetics and cell biology, RNA-seq, single-cell genomics, microscopy, stochastic modelling of biochemical networks and bioinformatics.

Funding Notes:

These studentships provide a generous stipend (currently £19,000), tuition fees and bench fees for 3.5 years.

This is an Interdisciplinary Cross Campus Collaborative Studentship (ICCS) with joint supervision from Dr Samuel Marguerat and Dr Vahid Shahrezaei. [http://www.csc.mrc.ac.uk/Jobs/PhDStudentship/ICCS/]

Applicants must meet Imperial College entry requirements.

For more information and an application form please follow the Apply Online link on this page.
CVs will not be accepted; you must fill out the application form available on the CSC website.

Interviews will be held at the start of September.

MINECO’s latest communication: application deadline SEPTEMBER 10th 2013
Join us study how neurons select and establish connections with their
appropriate synaptic partners, under the research project BFU2012-32282:
“Genomics and Genetics of Synaptic Specificity” funded by MINECO. We
address synaptic specificity by studying two closely related neurons that differ in
their connectivity: the R7 and R8 photoreceptors of the fly eye. Our previous
work revealed cell specific transcription factors regulating R7 and R8 wiring.
Using RNAseq, we have identified differentially expressed genes between these
two neurons. We are gearing up to test the requirement of differentially
expressed candidate genes and to characterize the transcriptional network
regulating their expression.
